Obituary of Bernhard G. Fischer

Please share a memory of Bernhard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Colonie - Bernhard G. Fischer peacefully entered eternal life on May 20th with the same quiet strength and courage that he always demonstrated. Born in Woodhaven, NY, he was the devoted son of the late Bernhard and Mary Teahan Fischer and the loving brother of the late Harold Fischer. After serving in the US Merchant Marines and the Army Air Force, he moved to the Albany area, where he met and married Marie Jones Fischer, who predeceased him in 2004. Bernie was a devoted husband and father, as well as a trusted and loyal friend. He lived a full and happy life and was always guided by his enduring faith. He worked for the Division of Criminal Identification of the New York State Department of Correction and later for the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, from which he retired in 1986. Thereafter, he began his “second career” at the Town of Colonie Golf Course, fully retiring a few years ago. Bernie was an active member of the former Our Lady of Mercy parish, as well as a longtime member of the German American Club in Colonie, the Disabled Veterans of America, and the Elks. We would be remiss in not noting that he was a loyal and faithful fan of the NY Giants, NY Knicks, and his beloved NY Mets. He is survived by his beloved children Mary Fischer (Kevin Ehrlich) of San Gabriel, CA and Bernhard “Biff” Fischer of Colonie, NY, many nieces and nephews, and an army of loyal friends. He will be missed by all of us, but never forgotten. His family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the physicians, nurses and staff of the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center for their excellent and compassionate care, especially the Dialysis Unit staff. Funeral 9:00 a.m. Saturday from the Reilly & Son Funeral Home, Colonie and at 10:00 o'clock at Christ our Light Church, Loudonville. Interment will immediately follow the Mass at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 4 - 8 p.m. on Friday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Fisher House Foundation, 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, MD 20850-5168 in Bernie’s name, to benefit veterans and their families.
