Obituary of Dorothy L. McDonald

New Salem – Dorothy L. McDonald, age 101 of South Road, New Salem, N.Y., died September 2, 2024 at home surrounded by her loving family. Dorothy was born in Albany, New York on October 17, 1922, the daughter of the late Lucy (Farley) McHugh and John Joseph McHugh. She graduated from Bethlehem High School and Mildred Elley and went on to work for the State of New York before assuming the role of mother and housewife to a growing family. Dorothy was a talented artist and enjoyed quilting and painting as well as gardening and reading. The greatest joy of Dorothy’s life was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was the wife of the late Hugh J. McDonald. She is survived by her children, Maureen T. Alonzo of Voorheesville and John P. Mc Donald of Bonney Lake, Washington; her grandchildren Erin (Brian) Reeve, Casey (Casey) McDonald-Oare, Matthew Hart, Jack (Amanda Schendzielos) McDonald, Rosemary (Zach) Patterson and John McDonald; her great-grandchildren, Connor (Hannah Dommasch) Weightman, Ian Reeve, Grace Reeve, Olivia Patterson, John Oare and Henry Oare. She is also survived by 12 nieces and nephews and daughter-in-law, Deborah McDonald. Dorothy was predeceased by her daughter, Dorothy E. McDonald, son Hugh K. McDonald, sister Mary Wehren, brothers Patrick Mc Hugh and John (Ida) Mc Hugh, sisters-in-law, Sr. Marianne McDonald, O.P., Ann (Jerry) Snee, brother-in-law, Br. John McDonald, S.J. and niece Patricia Snee.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, September 7 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, 25 Mountainview St., Voorheesville. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the church from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. prior to the mass.

Dorothy’s family wishes to thank Dr. Marino Baselice, M.D. and his nurse Sue for helping Dorothy to reach 100 years old with extraordinary care, love and good humor. The family would also like to thank the staff of The Community Hospice, especially Sue Stewart, R.N., for the kindness, love and support shown to Dorothy and her family over the past two years. The family would also like to extend a special thank you to Bonnie (Countryman) Griffin for a lifetime of unwavering love and support as well as the countless hours spent supporting the family and providing Dorothy with some of her favorite treats. Old friends are the best!
