When I was about 5 years old, maybe even younger, I was sitting in my parents car with my 2 sisters Betsy and Laura (Amy was not yet born) waiting for Aunt Joan. Our car was in the parking lot outside Albany Medical Center. It was a dark evening and raining. The car windows were rain spattered and I kept wiping away the fog trying to catch a glimpse of Aunt Joan. I remember being excited because we were picking up Aunt Joan who was getting off shift. Uncle Milt (I believe they were not married yet) was at the Pharmacy College across the street. He was unable to meet her so my parents were picking up Aunt Joan and taking her to wherever Uncle Milt was. There was urgency, but a happy urgency. I believe there was an event of some kind going to happen. I kept looking through the rain streaked and foggy window waiting to see Aunt Joan. All of a sudden there she was, like magic. Larger than life coming out of the darkness with an umbrella held above her. Her navy blue cape and white uniform and cap coming into view. All of a sudden Aunt Joan was at the car, laughing opening the door, shaking the umbrella as my mom slid over in the front seat to make room for Aunt Joan. The 3 of us kids were all happy and thrilled to be picking up our Aunt Joan. As she got into the car with the noise from her young nieces shrieking with excitement and our mom telling us to calm down, Aunt Joan gave us a big smile and made us feel immediately special to her. Her Cape was damp and the drops of rain from the closing umbrella spraying us girls made us more noisy! The white cap still remained pinned in place on her head... Aunt Joan was magical as could be in that nurses uniform. In those few seconds of pure joy, I felt our car was just the perfect place to be in the moment. That's how Aunt Joan and Uncle Milt always made us feel, perfect and loved. I think this is why that memory sticks with me to this day. I am now 67 yrs old and that brief moment, waiting for Aunt Joan that cool rainy evening is still a part of me. Like it just happened. There are countless, truly countless, wonderful simple moments of growing up in a world with Aunt Joan and Uncle Milt. Two very special people who then gave us 3 cousins to love! The memories are with us. Lots to be thankful for. ❤ Ellen (2nd daughter of Carolyn who is Aunt Joan's 2nd sister)

I met Joan when I became a member of the Dutch Settlers Society of Albany. She was a very kind person, and I am blessed to have known her. My condolences to all of her family.
This photograph was taken September 27, 2006 in Albany on the Hudson River. We are standing in front of the replica ship "De Halve Maen" or Half Moon, the ship Henry Hudson used for his journey in 1609.
With Deepest Sympathies,
E. James Schermerhorn

I have many fond memories of Joan. While I was a student at AMCH she married my cousin Milt. She was my instructor for Infectious diseases and she helped me get a job later on as a clinical instructor. I was close to my Aunt Margaret, Milt's mother, having lived with her for a short time. Aunt Margaret always kept me filled in about the horses, I especially remember the horse, Tressa C. I always enjoyed keeping in touch with Joan until she was no longer able. I enjoyed coming to family events with my late cousin Mitzie. Her obituary is a fine tribute to a life well lived. Memories of her are a blessing for all of us. Margaret Moore Larkin

Joan and I met 24 years ago. We had an immediate click. A few years later we met more often when I became a member of A Group of Friends (AGOF).
Joan was proud of her Dutch heritage and was active in the Dutch Settlers Society.
The photo is made in 2009, during the commemoration festival of the arrival of Henry Hudson in the New World 400 years ago. Joan is proudly wearing her Dutch costume and is flanked by 2 Dutch friends: Marianne Vernon and me.
She is leaving me with many pleasant memories.

Sending you so much love right now. Your mom was a wonderful lady. She was always so good to me and I will treasure the memories of going to the Dutch Settler teas with her. Visiting her house always felt magical to me as a kid -- an absolute playground.
Please know that I am thinking of all of you.
